Possibility #3

When the first vowel is elided, the following vowel may be lengthened.

tatraayaṃ > tatrāyaṃ

aa > ā

This means:

when a word ends in a,

and the next word starts with a,

the first a can be elided,

and the second a can be lengthened.

In Kaccāyana this is called (15) dīghaṃ.
