When ṃ is followed by a consonant,

ṃ may be elided.

in verses

e.g. buddhānaṃ + sāsanaṃ > buddhānasāsanaṃ

In Kaccāyana this is called (39) byañjane ca

ṃ elided before a consonant

buddhānaṃ	sāsanaṃ	buddhānasāsanaṃ	buddha’s teaching
ariya- saccānaṃ	dassanaṃ	ariyasaccāna dassanaṃ	seeing the noble truths
paresaṃ	pāva	paresa pāva	tells to others
vanasmiṃ	vānaro	vanasmi vānaro	monkey in the forest
pajaheyyuṃ	dukkhaṃ	pajaheyyu dukkhaṃ	they could abandon suffering

Counter-examples:

all the normal cases where ṃ is not elided
