Anubandha

Anubandha

When suffixes are added, all the usual rules of sandhi apply

Some kita and taddhita suffixes force guṇa & vuḍḍhi to take place. These are noted in traditional grammars by the letter ṇ. We are using the symbol *. This is called an anubandha or indicatory symbol.

e.g. ṇa or *a

√bhuj to enjoy + *a (+ ṇa) bhoga
√car to walk + *a (+ ṇa) cāra
√caj to give up + *a (+ ṇa) cāga

Please note - when there is an anubandha (*), the first vowel is always lengthened, e.g. magadha + *a > māgadha.

Except when ...

  1. a double consonant follows, e.g. addhā + *ika > addhika
  1. there is an aspirate consonant, e.g. kathā + *ika > kathika
  1. the vowel is already long, e.g. nīla + *a > nīla
