Anubandha
Anubandha¶
When suffixes are added, all the usual rules of sandhi apply
Some kita and taddhita suffixes force guṇa & vuḍḍhi to take place. These are noted in traditional grammars by the letter ṇ. We are using the symbol *. This is called an anubandha or indicatory symbol.
e.g. ṇa or *a
| √bhuj | to enjoy | + *a (+ ṇa) | bhoga |
| √car | to walk | + *a (+ ṇa) | cāra |
| √caj | to give up | + *a (+ ṇa) | cāga |
Please note - when there is an anubandha (*), the first vowel is always lengthened, e.g. magadha + *a > māgadha.
Except when ...
- a double consonant follows, e.g. addhā + *ika > addhika
- there is an aspirate consonant, e.g. kathā + *ika > kathika
- the vowel is already long, e.g. nīla + *a > nīla
