DPD for Apple Dictionary
DPD is now available as a native Apple Dictionary, allowing you to look up Pāḷi words directly in the built-in Dictionary app and with system-wide lookup.
In Brief
- Download dpd-apple.dictionary.zip from GitHub Releases
- Unzip the file
- Move
Digital-Pali-Dictionary.dictionaryto~/Library/Dictionaries/ - Restart Dictionary app
Detailed Instructions
Download
Download the latest dpd-apple.dictionary.zip from GitHub Releases.
Unzip
Locate the downloaded .zip file in your Downloads folder and double-click to unzip it. You'll get a file called Digital-Pali-Dictionary.dictionary.
Install the Dictionary
Open Finder and press Shift + Command + G (or go to Go > Go to Folder...).
Type ~/Library/Dictionaries/ and press Enter.
If the Dictionaries folder doesn't exist, create it first.
Move the Digital-Pali-Dictionary.dictionary file into this folder.
Restart Dictionary App
If the Dictionary app is open, quit it completely (Command + Q) and reopen it.
Enable DPD
Open Dictionary app and go to Dictionary > Settings (or press Command + ,).
Make sure "Digital Pali Dictionary" is checked in the list of dictionaries. You can drag it to change the order.
Using DPD
- Dictionary app: Type the word in the search bar
- System-wide lookup: Select any word and press
Control + Command + Dfor a quick definition popup - Inflected forms: Searching "dhammassa" will open the main "dhamma" entry
